A note first: We are in the process of refining our pattern and will reopen for wool cover order in the very near future.
Most people who are just starting cloth diapering are confused at the use of wool for covers. (Isn’t it too hot in the summer? Isn’t it itchy? Doesn’t it smell like wet sheep?) Not so far back in the cloth diapering timeline, though, hand knitted wool ‘soakers’ were commonly used over top of cotton diapers.
Wool has many properties that make it an excellent fabric choice for diaper covers:
- It is a natural insulator, keeping one warm in the winter and cool in the summer.
- Its breathability helps keep dreaded diaper rash at bay.
- It resists odours; just hang it to dry in between uses and wash it when needed.
- The fibres naturally repel moisture, thereby preventing leaks.
- Contrary to popular belief, wool isn’t always itchy; the soft merino wool we use can be worn comfortably next to the skin.
- It's a renewable resource!
